In homes without cavity wall insulation up to a third of the heat is lost through the walls. Installing cavity wall insulation can save you around £160 per year from your heating bills.

Some homes are not suitable for installing insulation. As the name suggests you must have a cavity between your inner and outer walls. Homes built after 1930 will usually have this.

The cost of installing cavity walls is about £500, so the payback time will be about 4 years. The good news is that there are subsidies available which reduce the cost by half. This means that you could recoup your initial investment in only 2 years.

Filling cavity walls is not something that you can carry out by yourself but must be done by a registered installer.
