1. Take your car a month early. Pass, and the MOT is valid for 13 months. Fail, and you have an extra month to obtain quotes for the repair work.
2. Find a test centre that only carries out MOT tests and not repairs. That way, there is no conflict of interests. If you do choose a garage which carries out both, make sure it is recommended.
3. To stand more chance of passing the emissions test, make sure your car is fully warmed up before delivering it to the MOT test centre.
4. If you're a woman, consider asking a male to drive the vehicle to the test centre. Rogue mechanics are more likely to rip off a female driver.
5. If your vehicle fails the MOT test, don't feel pressurised to have it done on the spot. Shop around to get a better price.
