1). Most Gps devices have an option for either quickest route or shortest route. Many people assume that the best option for saving petrol is by using the shortest route.
The quickest route is usually the best option to use for saving petrol as the shortest route usually goes via many side streets and traffic lights. A stop-start route uses more petrol.
2). Make good use of the waypoint option. Most GPS units have the ability to mark hundreds of waypoints. Enter waypoints for the places you visit most often. When running errands and the like, use these with the quickest route option to navigate your way around. The GPS system will highlight many faster ways to get from A to B.
