Get Some Free Energy Saving Light Bulbs
If you replace your conventional lightbulbs with energy saving ones it could shave up to 80% from your lighting bills.
The typical lightbulb works by passing an electric current through a filament. This creates light but a large proportion of the energy is lost as heat.
Compact fluorescent lightbulbs or CFL's work by converting far more of the electricity into light, and thus less heat is wasted.
The CFL consists of a gas-filled tube and an electronic ballast. The electronic ballast causes a current to flow through the gas which produces ultraviolet light. The emitted light excites a phosphor coating on the inside of the tube which in turn produces visible light.
Although CFL's are generally up to 6 times more expensive than their conventional counterparts, their lifetime is up to 15 times greater.
The greater cost of a CFL is more than compensated for by its greater energy efficiency and longer lifetime. Replacing 15 fixtures in your house with CFLs costing about £40 would save you about £400 over the 5 year lifetime of the bulbs. Overall, electricity bills could be reduced by anything up to 12%.

If you take environmental considerations into account a CFL would save 2000 times its own weight in greenhouse gases.
A lot of myths are prevalent about CFLs. It is said that they are bulky , ugly, that they flicker and take a lifetime to warm up. CFLs do take longer to warm up but manufacturers are constantly researching ways to improve this slight disadvantage.
